12 Steps to Joy (9)

The Word of Life (2)

In the beginning the Word already existed.

                        The Word was with God,

                        And the Word was God.

The Word existed in the beginning with God.

God created everything through the Word,

And nothing was created except through the Word.

The Word gave life to everything that was created,

And the life of the Word brought light to everyone.

The light shines in the darkness,

And the darkness can never extinguish it.”

                                                                        John 1:1-5.

The Word gave life to everything that was created,

And the life of the Word brought light to everyone.

Now we get into the meat of the discussion: can science prove that there is no God? interestingly enough, I recently came across a book exactly on this topic: “Why Science does not disprove God”, by Amir D. Aczel, a renowned science writer on these topics for Scientific American and many other science-oriented publications. He points out that all of refutation of the possibility of God use unmentioned but sneaky ways to attempt to “prove” that there is no God. basically, they use math as their crutch, and just because math can be made to fit any conclusion by using unproven or faulty premises, so too are all the claims that ‘this proves there is no reason to have a Creator’.

For instance, I was discussing this very thing with a physics teacher at a local college recently, and he made the statement that ‘we know that if some of the virtual forces that blink in and out of space were to last a few seconds, a new universe would be borne in a big bang’, thus eliminating the need for a Creator. This statement assumes many things that we have no way of knowing, and no way of ever finding out. That is, this assumes that the conditions outside of our universe are the same as the conditions in space inside our universe. Gravity is the same, relativity is the same, and strong and weak forces are the same; but there is no way to know; not even hints give us any suggestions..

In truth, we know so little about the universe that it is shocking that someone could say they know for sure that everything is self-generated from nothing. We know some about matter, and since that is what we have around us that we can see, touch, and experiment with, since it is our everyday experience. Even here we are not sure, and quantum physics gives everybody a headache! The equations are elegant, and we find that experiments seem to verify much, but we still do not understand why. I have read several interesting comments from some of the most brilliant physicists in the world that no one understands why things appear to be what they are.

Gravity does not fit anything, as it seems to be a spooky force that is open, that is it is only attractive and never repelling.

Most important, all we can do is report how things behave. We have absolutely no idea what these forces are: we cannot define what we mean by ‘force’ other than describe the measurable attributes. That is, what is ‘gravity’? Yes, we know precisely how much gravity a gram of matter has, but why? And what? We talk of ‘forces’, but a force is a mathematical term that has certain features, but w still do not have any idea what a ’force’ is.

But there is a catch: physical matter makes up only 4% of the universe. And as said, we do not understand why this 4% behaves as it does, using what appear to be random constants and puzzling behavior that we can model, but have no understanding ‘why’, other than to say if it were different we would not be here to describe it; ergo it has to be the way it is.

Now we know about the rest of the universe by the way it interacts with what we can measure. What we have termed ‘dark matter’ makes up 23% of the universe. It is called dark matter because electromagnetic energy (light, as in all frequencies from radio up) fail to interact with dark matter, but only gravity interacts; whatever gravity is. Dark matter appears to be like a shell of varying thickness around all galaxies, and causes the galaxies and stars within galaxies to move and rotate in a strange manner. We cannot see it, but it makes the stars in galaxies move in a strange manner, depending on the thickness or strength of the dark matter shell. Cosmologists have plotted the thickness and shape around galaxies using the strange behavior of the stars in the galaxy that move in ways that do not follow Newton’s laws, in galaxies that are close and large, and it is strange indeed. We have no idea what dark matter was doing during the big bang when temperatures went from millions of degrees K to reach the present 2 degrees Kelvin (K) (close to absolute zero).

I have not talked about dark energy, which makes us the remaining 73% of the universe.

And yet folks say that obviously it is all natural and no force beyond nature is involved.

More next time. Yes indeed, maybe, just maybe, the Word gave life to all.

Meditation

Creator Blest, I marvel at the breadth and depth of all that You have created, staggering immensity but built on tiny spheres of life. From the electron to the universe and beyond, all is contained in Your wisdom and strength. It is Your Word that we exist, and You have breathed life into our mixes of creative stuff. It is Life itself that pulls me into Your center, and in seeing Your Life in all that exist I understand where and what the Kingdom of God that dwells within truly is. I bow in strength and love and trust You to lead me to fulfilling my function that I came to give and experience.

We are bound in the music of life where we dance and weave within that glorious melody, or what some call God. Now, God has said that we are the very image of God (Genesis 1:27), and as images of God, we have the inborn ability to have Joy and Happiness forever present in our life. The author, David L. Peters, is an octogenarian whose life has always been filled with joy, regardless of outward appearances. The wonders of the Kingdom of Heaven is everyone’s birthright, if you know how to let your Creator and the Universe enter your spirit. Jesus put it succinctly: “The Kingdom of God lies within” (Luke 17:21). The Kingdom of God, Paradise, Heaven: these lie within you, right now, waiting for you to only turn and see, and join in the dance. Paradise is right within us, but how do we unlock the door to this wonder of joy? This book lays a path open that the author has followed for almost 80 years, starting as a young boy in rural Ohio, and it operates as advertised. No matter how things look in life, how bad it seems, all one need do is look deeper within and find the joy that can fill life: life is good! The life of abundant joy and happiness is yours for the asking. Dip your toe in the living waters, and taste the Beauty of God that is awaiting. 1. Standing on the bare ground, — my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space, — all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eye-ball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God.
    -Ralph Waldo Emerson
