God is Love (27)
1 John 4:8
Love always perseveres (2)
1 Corinthians 13
We are Love, only Love, in our Core
We are included in the total definition of God, as spoken in the story of Moses and the burning bush. When Moses asked the bush writhing with flames but not being consumed, who he should say sent him, “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. This is what you say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you’”. Exodus 3:14 (NIV). God is the Great I AM, which includes everything that is. I AM says it all, and we cannot confine God to this or that, as so many religions attempt to do. It frightens us all when we look deeply at the definition of God: I AM WHO I AM. To me, this expresses what we call creation into the unity of I AM, leaving nothing out. Does this small thing we call creation define God? Of course not, but we attempt to define God by trying to suggest what God is not.
But you see, God perseveres, despite all that we attempt to do to lock God into this box or that box, by saying “Oh no, God can not be this or that…” but God has overruled these objections, by simply stating “I AM”.
Of course, Genesis 1 states it clearly: “God created humanity in the image of God, in the image of God, God created them, male and female God created them.” Genesis 1:26 (NIH, modified). We are the image of God, therefore, as an image, we harbor within us the fundamentals of God Itself.
We are in our core a being having the qualities of our Creator, God. There is no way we can be separated from our very being, the agent of our very life, that force or being we call God, the one who proclaimed “I AM WHO I AM.”
In order to complete the circle, we have to go back to the definition of God in the first letter of John, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them”. 1 John 4:16 (NIV). Thus being the image of God, we are, in our most fundamental being, in our core, love, only love. The perseverance of the love of God is fundamental to existence, in the existence not only to our life, but to the existence of our body, the planet earth, our sun, the galaxy, and yes, the universe. All of what we call the universe is part of the great mystery of God, extending from the smallest particle of interstellar dust (99.9%of what we call matter), to all the ‘dark matter’ and forces that make up 96% of the universe, and then beyond the universe into the great unknown.
Our most fundamental being, the seat of our conscious awareness, is that core being that is the image of God, that can never be separated from us, for if that would occur we would cease to exist. We are the very image of the core of life, and that is why Jesus could say with a straight face: “The kingdom of God is within you.” Luke 17:21 (KJB).
Thus we can say, truthfully:
We are love, only love, in our core.
“God is our refuge and strength,
An ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Though the earth give way.”
Psalm 46 1-2 (NIV)
Meditation
My God, my refuge when times are difficult, when the roaring lion is about to grab me, I am grateful for you gentle protection that holds me close. I know that wrapped in your Love I can never be harmed, even though death beckons me into the dark waters. I present myself to you each day, where I can find surety day after day, while You lead me home. I understand that the Kingdom of God is in me, around me, over me, and under me. If I but keep my eyes open and have my awareness and perception tuned to the kingdom of God, my joy and happiness will always be with me, no matter if the earth gives way, as the psalmist writes.
