Living in Unconditional Love (264)
“Love flows from God to humans without effort:
As a bird glides through the air without moving its wings-
Thus, they go wherever they wish united in body and soul,
Yet separate in form.”
–Mechtild of Magdeburg
My wife Eileen died from esophageal cancer in February 2020 one year after being diagnosed, 60 years after we met on Long Island. Then my brother Tom became ill (not COVID), and I spent a total of six weeks being with him in Ohio, but he died in October 2020. My sister-in-law Sue Mahoney died from Covid-19 in January 2021. On top of it all stood the pandemic, locking everyone down almost two years. Covid has proved to be a persistent problem, and many of the long-term effects are quite serious, and it has proven much more serious than flu.
04/19/2026 Seems a bit strange to be home, but at the same time it seems like I never left. I have been hit by mice and will be calling the pest service for help. We are having a very warm April, but they are predicting a cooler period this coming week. (We had snow on Sunday)
One of the joys of being a grandparent and staying with the young ones is catching them just being joyful and full of happiness. Shortly before I left Peru, I was in the kitchen watching the kids playing. Madison, who just turned three, started riding her tricycle around the living room, which I have seen her do many times. Then she started to sing! I have never heard the kids sing when playing before, but she sang (in Spanish) just enjoying herself, lost in her own little world while she pedaled around the room. Pure joy that has remained with me ever since.
Most of my time has been spent with mail and a bunch of stuff that needed attention and I had to call for help (furnace quit, cleaning service came, etc.) my gardens have been weeded and things are looking good. I have not had to mow the lawn, but it is supposed to rain over the next week, so I had better get things ready to mow.
The daffodils are finally starting to bloom well, and the next few weeks will be glorious. Their bright colors and bright green grass make a beautiful scene.
Meditation
Gentle One, I beg Your grace and help in this time of pain and loss that is upon us. Help all to see the joys of life and trust that are available to all. I thank You for all the blessings You have showered on me, especially in the joy of my grandchildren.
